Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan welcomed their first child, a daughter named Maxima, affectionately named Max in their lives last Wednesday.
In a letter to the infant who he fondly addresses as Max posted to his Facebook page, Zuckerberg stated: “We’re very glad to welcome our daughter Max into this world. Everyone is happy and healthy. Thank you all for your love and encouragement through our pregnancy. There is so much joy in this little family.”
His wife Priscilla Chan gave birth to the 7-pound, 8-ounce Max last week, but the 31-year-old newly turned father posted the news on Facebook on Monday along with a photo of him with his wife and the baby with a letter the parents wrote “about the world in which we hope she grows up in.”
“We are focused on doing our small part to assist create this world for all children. We will give 99 per cent of our Facebook shares – at the moment about USD 45 billion – during our lives to join many others in improving this world for the next generation,” he said from the post.
The gift – which they call “a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation”, which is a huge chunk of their fortune won’t happen right out. According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Zuckerberg plans to “sell or gift” no greater than USD 1 billion worth of Facebook stock every year over the next three years.
The California-based social network’s filing also indicates that Zuckerberg plans to contribute the funds into a new initiative named the Chan Zuckerberg Effort to “advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation”.
